African Elephant, Loxodonta africana.
Tsavo East National Park, Kenya.
I patiently watched the herd make the long walk up to the watering hole in the late afternoon heat, arriving to a much needed cooling drink and bathe.Elephants tend to drink and bathe daily (although they can go several days without either), this elephant spent considerable time bathing, flapping it's ears to cool down as the mud dried onto it's skin. Large boulders were strewn around the watering hole, and it kept standing its fore legs on them, gaining height over the herd, set against the stunning Tsavo East horizon.
